why do you stay nangu pungu

    12 months ago 440

In Jainism, the idea of “nanga” (naked) for monks is a specific tradition.

    • Digambar tradition: Some monks go completely naked as a deliberate renunciation of all possessions, including clothing. This symbolizes detachment from the body and from worldly comforts, and a strict commitment to non-attachment and simplicity on the path to liberation. It is not universal in Jainism—only certain Digambar ascetics practice this openly; many Digambar monks do not wear clothes in daylight but may use clothing in certain circumstances or seasons.
    • Shwetambar tradition: Monks typically wear white robes. The practice of wearing clothes is part of their renunciation and rules, and nakedness is not observed among Shwetambar monks.

    Why they choose differently:

    • Both traditions aim for the same goal: ahimsa (non-violence), aparigraha (non-attachment), and spiritual purification. The outward practice (nakedness vs. clothed) reflects different interpretations of how strictly to renounce worldly comforts and how to express ascetic vows.

If you’d like, I can give you a brief, tradition-specific note on the ethical meanings (arth) of nakedness in Digambar discipline versus clothed renunciation in Shwetambar discipline.
