Those noble people who perform the austerity of Varsitap complete the austerity on this day by taking sugar-cane juice in the cool shadow of Shatrunjay. Bhagwan Rishabdev performed the Parana (completion of an austerity) on this day after fasting for one year continuously. This day is considered to be very auspicious for going on a pilgrimage to Shatrunjay. This falls on the 3rd day of the bright fortnight of Vaishakh.
Akshaya Tritiya is one of the most auspicious days for Hinduism and Jainism. We all know the importance of this date in Hinduism. But many of you are not aware of the significance of Akshaya Tritiya in Jainism. On this day, the first Tirthankara of Jainism Lord Rishabhadeva also known as Lord Aadinath got his first aahaar. This day has established the first aahaar-charya methodology; a process to prepare and serve food to Jain monks.
It started when King Rishabhadeva left everything and became a Jain Monk.
He has started self-cultivation. To everyone's knowledge, jain monks do not take anything with them. They only accept food and water once in a day maximum. They go out to accept aahaar. But it should be with proper disciplines of Jain monks. Muni Rishabhadeva meditated for six months without food and water. After six months, he set out to accept aahaar. But during that time people were unaware of any principles and method of aahaar charya. Six months past and still Muni Rishabhadeva did not find anyone who can offer him aahaar with proper disciplines and methods. It has been a year Muni Rishabhadeva was without aahaar.
It was King Shreyansa from Hastinapur, who understood the aahaar charya due to his previous life memories (Purva bhav smaran). On the Tritya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh, i.e. on Akshaya Tritiya, Muni Rishabhadeva got his first aahaar of sugarcane juice from King Shreyansa. Since then, Akshaya Tritiya became the auspicious day in Jainism.
Muni Rishabhadeva became the first Tirthankara Lord Rishabhadeva. As he was the first Tirthankara, he is also known as Lord Aadinath. Many Jain people keep fast today and do prayers. This is the significance of Akshaya Tritiya in Jainism.
