The story of Gajpad Kund

The story of Gajpad Kund

Once upon a time, Bharat Maharaja organized the Pratishta (consecration) of Neminath Bhagwan, which was conducted by Gandhar Bhagwant. The news of this auspicious event reached Lord Indra, who eagerly made his way to Girnar on his majestic Airavat Elephant. Filled with anticipation and reverence, Lord Indra desired to see and offer prayers to Neminath Bhagwan.

Upon arriving, Lord Indra, with the intention of providing water for the sacred worship of Neminath Bhagwan, commanded his loyal Airavat Elephant to strike the ground forcefully with its powerful foot. As a result, a small crater was formed, known as the 'Gajapad Kund' or 'Gajendrapad Kund' or even 'Haathi-Pagla Kund'. This pond held a special significance as it received water from rivers spanning the three worlds, and its enchanting fragrance attracted bees from far and wide.

The fragrance emanating from the Kund was so exquisite and captivating that it surpassed all other aromas. It was believed that by simply using the water from this Kund to worship the Lord, one could attain the same spiritual benefits as visiting and performing rituals at any other revered pilgrimage site. The water possessed divine purity and had the power to alleviate physical and mental ailments through its mere touch.

The divine occasion also witnessed the participation of various demi-gods, each creating their own unique ponds endowed with extraordinary qualities. Their eagerness to offer prayers and worship to Neminath Bhagwan seemed like a friendly competition among them. Ultimately, Saudharmendra, the ruler of the first DevLok (heaven), wholeheartedly performed the worship of Neminath Bhagwan using flowers brought from the celestial abode.

Even Bharat Maharaja, after purifying himself with the sacred water from the Gajapad Kund, fervently worshipped Neminath Bhagwan. This extraordinary Gajapad Kund, blessed with immense powers, continues to exist on the Girnar mountain, serving as a testament to its divine nature. The water level of this Kund never increases or decreases. So next time when you visit Girnar don't forget to visit this auspicious Kund.
