Nestled on the banks of a picturesque lake in the village of Makshi stands a majestic black-colored idol of Bhagwan Makshi Parshwanath, rising to a height of almost 89 cms and seated gracefully in the padmasana posture, adorned with an umbrella boasting seven hoods.
Sacred Site: This sanctum holds an ancient idol, venerable for over 2,500 years. Sangram Soni, a devout Shravak, flourishing through prosperous endeavors in Mandavgarh, became a minister under Badshah Ghiasuddin. The village of Makshi, home to 17 Jain temples, witnessed the ceremonial installation of the revered idol by Acharya Shri Somsundarsurishvarji in V.S.1472. When Mohammed Ghazni, intending to destroy the temple, fell seriously ill and experienced supernatural forces, he not only ordered the army to retreat but also left the temple and its idol untouched. In a symbolic act of repentance, he adorned the temple's entry gate with five miniature turrets. Miracles, such as milk flowing from the idol's hood, continue to grace the temple, captivating the devotees.
Artistic Marvels and Sculpture: The ancient and miraculous idol of Parshwanath, an epitome of magnificence and beauty, is a testament to sculptural artistry that has perpetually fascinated pilgrims. The temple itself is adorned with intricate and artistic carvings.
Guidelines for Pilgrims: Situated 1.5 kms from the Makshi railway station, the village is easily accessible, being 40 kms from Ujjain and 70 kms from Indore on the Mumbai-Agra Road. A tar road leads directly to the temple, and both bus and private vehicle services are available. Pilgrims can find comfort in the provided Dharamshala and Bhojanshala facilities.
Scripture and Legacy: The temple's construction is credited to Sangram Soni, as documented in "Vir Vanshavali." A disciple of Jagatguru Hirvijaysurishvarji composed a "Stotra" dedicated to Makshiya Parshwanath. References to Makshi Parshwanath are found in sacred texts like "365 Shri Parshvajin Naammala," "Shri Sankheswar Parshvanath Chand," "108 Naamgarbhit Shri Godi Parshvanath Stavan," "Shri Bhateva Parshvanath Stavan," "Shri Parshvanath Naammala," "Shri Parshvanath Chaityaparipati," "Tirthmala," and "Makshi Mandan Shri Parshvanath Stavan." Additionally, idols of Makshi Parshwanath are revered in Shri Kareda Tirth, Jiravala Tirth, and the Kalikund Parshvanath temple in Santacruz, Mumbai.
