Meaning & Spiritual Explanation of Uvasaggaharam Stotra
Historical Origin of Uvasaggaharam Stotra: Uvasaggaharam Stotra was composed over 2,100 years ago by Shruta Kevali Acharya Bhadrabahu Swami in adoration of the 23rd Tirthankara, Bhagwan Parshwanath. When a wrathful Vyantara deity caused severe distress and epidemic (Upasarga) among the Jain Sangh, Acharya Bhadrabahu Swami composed this sacred five-stanza Prakrit hymn to remove all obstacles and afflictions.
Verse 1 Meaning: I bow to Lord Parshwanath, who is attended by the distress-removing Parshwa Yaksha, who is free from all dense Karmas, who destroys the poison of poisonous defilements, and who is the abode of auspiciousness and supreme welfare.
Verse 2 Meaning: Whoever holds the 18-syllable Visaharfullinga Mantra (Namiuna Pasa Visahara Vasaha Jina Fullinga) in their heart and throat sees all planetary afflictions, diseases, epidemics, and acute fevers subside peacefully.
Verse 3 Meaning: Leaving aside even that mantra, merely bowing in reverence to You, O Lord, yields immense spiritual fruit—ensuring that living beings never fall into misery or unwholesome states of existence.
Verse 4 Meaning: By attaining Right Faith (Samyaktva) in Your teachings—which surpasses even the wish-fulfilling Chintamani gem and Kalpavriksha tree—souls effortlessly attain the ageless, immortal state of liberation (Moksha).
Verse 5 Meaning: O Illustrious Lord Parshva Jinachandra! Having praised You with a heart overflowing with devotion, I pray: kindly bestow Right Enlightenment (Bodhi) upon me in every life.
