    Jain farming weeds

    11 months ago 71

Jain perspective on farming and weeds (in simple terms)

    • Core principle: ahimsa (non-violence) toward all living beings. Because tilling soil and farming can injure many tiny life forms (insects, worms, microbes), traditional Jain thought often discourages farming, especially for ascetics. For lay Jains, farming has been practiced with careful efforts to minimize harm. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • How to minimize harm in farming:
    - Use methods that disturb the soil least and avoid unnecessary uprooting of plants. - Avoid or reduce chemical pesticides and fertilizers that kill or harm many life forms. - Prefer organic, natural, and non-chemical approaches to weed control, pest management, and soil health. - Consider non-tillage or low-impact farming practices and crop rotations to reduce harm to soil life. - Some Jains also avoid root vegetables when possible, to limit uprooting and damage to soil ecosystems.
    • Weeds specifically:
    - Weeds are living beings; managing them should aim to reduce harm rather than eradicate violently. - Manual weeding, mulching, and mechanical methods that limit injury to beneficial soil life are preferred over harsh chemical controls.
    • Traditions and diversity:
    - Both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions emphasize ahimsa, but there can be differences in how strictly farming is pursued by householders today. The overarching aim remains to act with compassion toward all life and to minimize violence in daily work, including agriculture. ( jainknowledge.com)
