    11 months ago 292

Here are the 10 Das Lakshan (ten supreme virtues) in Jainism, explained simply:

    1) Uttam Kshama — supreme forgiveness

    • Be ready to forgive others, letting go of anger and hurt.

    2) Uttam Mardav — supreme humility

    • Act with modesty, be gentle, and avoid pride.

    3) Uttam Arjava — supreme straightforwardness

    • Speak and act honestly, with straight and sincere intention.

    4) Uttam Shaucha — supreme purity

    • Keep purity of mind, speech, and body; avoid harmful thoughts and actions.

    5) Uttam Satya — supreme truth

    • Always tell the truth and live truthfully.

    6) Uttam Sanyam — supreme self-control

    • Exercise control over desires, senses, and impulses.

    7) Uttam Tap — supreme austerity

    • Practice disciplined living, renunciation of excess, and inner restraint.

    8) Uttam Tyag — supreme renunciation

    • Let go of attachments to things, wealth, and ego.

    9) Uttam Akinchanya — supreme non-possessiveness

    • Do not cling to possessions or hoard; share and let go.

    10) Uttam Brahmacharya — supreme celibacy/chastity

    • Observe proper conduct in relationships; cultivate inner purity.

    Notes

    • These ten virtues are central to the Digambar Jain Das Lakshan Parva, observed as a 10-day focus after the monsoon season. The Shwetambar tradition connects related reflections with Paryushan and its a week-long or longer observances, so the exact practices can differ between Digambar and Shwetambar communities.
