type of gyan according to jainism
Jainism recognizes five kinds of knowledge (jnana), together called Panch Jnana.
- Mati Jnana (Sensory knowledge): knowledge gained through the senses and mind; it is indirect and can be right or wrong.
- Shruta Jnana (Scriptural/verbal knowledge): knowledge heard from scriptures and teachers; also indirect.
- Avadhi Jnana (Clairvoyant knowledge): direct knowledge of distant or subtle objects without ordinary senses.
- Manah-paryaya Jnana (Telepathic knowledge): knowledge of the thoughts of others; direct and refined.
- Kevala Jnana (Omniscient knowledge): perfect, infinite knowledge of all times and all things; attained by purified souls (Arihants/Siddhas).
Notes:
- Mati and Shruta are considered indirect (parokṣa) knowledge; Avadhi, Manah-paryāya, and Kevala are direct (pratyakṣa) knowledge.
- Kevala Jnana is the ultimate goal for liberation; there is no creator-god granting it—it is realized by the soul itself through purification.
