Is there concept of ghosts in Jainism?
- In Jainism there isn’t a separate, enduring category of “ghosts” like in some folk beliefs. The focus is on the soul (jiva) and its karma, not on haunted beings.
- After death, a jiva is reborn into one of the four gatis (realms of existence) according to its karma: deva gati (heavenly beings), manushya gati (humans), tiryak‑yoni (animals and other beings), or naraki gati (hell beings). These are states of existence caused by karma, not independent spirits haunting the living. A soul remains in a gati for as long as its karma lasts and then may be reborn again, or attain moksha through right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct. This is the standard Jain view across both Digambara and Shwetambara traditions. ( jainknowledge.com)
