• There is no single universal number for Jain gotras. Traditionally, many Śvetāmbara Jain communities (like Oswal and Porwal) refer to 84 gotras, known as the chourasi gotra. But the exact list and even the counted number can vary between communities and regions. Digambar communities likewise have their own lists, and sometimes 84 is cited there too, but again it can differ by lineage. The important point in Jain Dharma is that gotras are social/ancestral lineages used for community organizing and exogamy, not spiritual goals.
