Antarāya karma means obstructing karma. It is one of the eight main karmas that bind the soul and specifically hinders the soul’s energy to act rightly. It causes obstacles in charitable giving, earning, enjoying experiences, and in spiritual practice.

Five sub-types (the ways it obstructs):

• Dana Antarāya: obstructs giving charity.
• Laabh Antarāya: obstructs earning or receiving gains.
• Bhog Antarāya: obstructs the enjoyment of things that can be eaten or consumed.
• Upabhog Antarāya: obstructs the enjoyment of things that can be used repeatedly (like wealth, property).
• Virya Antarāya: obstructs the will-power/energy to act.

Effect: it dampens the soul’s energy (virya), and blocks doing good, gaining, or even worship and practice.

Both Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions affirm Antarāya as one of the core eight karmas, with the same basic meaning, though minor sub-type descriptions can vary slightly between lineages.
