What is Antaraay karm in shwetanbar
Antarāya karma( Antaray) is one of the eight main karmas in Jainism. In Śvetāmbara (Shwetambar) Jainism, it is explained as the obstructive karma that blocks the soul’s energy and its ability to act or progress. It particularly hinders positive activities like giving charity, gaining or enjoying results, and even pursuing spiritual practices. It acts like a stopper on the soul’s potential.
There are five commonly listed sub-types of Antarāya karma:
- Danantarāya (obstruction to giving/receiving charity)
- Labhantarāya (obstruction to gaining or acquiring things)
- Bhogantarāya (obstruction to enjoying pleasures)
- Upabhogantarāya (obstruction to using or partaking in things for nourishment or pleasure)
- Viryantarāya (obstruction to one’s own energy and efforts, including spiritual effort)
In both Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions, the core idea is the same: Antarāya binds and blocks the soul’s activity, energy, and potential. Differences between the two traditions are usually about lists, sub-types, or phrasing, not the fundamental concept itself.
