Ichhāmi khamāsamano Sutra (खमासमण सूत्र) – Original text and meaning

Original text (Prakrit): ichchhämi khamäsamano! vandium, jävanijjäe nisihiäe, matthaena vandämi.

Arth (meaning) in Jain tradition:

• This Sutra is a prayer of humility and forgiveness. It literally means: “I wish to be forgiving (I seek forgiveness); I bow to the embodiment of forgiveness with my head touching the ground.” It is recited while bowing to the Tirthankar or to the Guru, as part of pratikraman and reasonable rites of repentance.

Notes:

• It is also known as Panchäng Pranipät Sutra because the bowing posture involves the five body parts (two hands, two knees, and the forehead) touching the ground.
• In both Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions, this phrase is used to express a sincere request for pardon and to diminish harmful tendencies (kashāyas) through humility.
