Bal Diksha dress code (Bal-Diksha)

• What it is: Bal Diksha is the initiation of a child into Jain study and vows, a preparatory step before taking stricter vows as an ascetic in the future. For children, the dress is about modesty, simplicity, and cleanliness.

• Suggested dress: simple, clean white clothing or very light, plain attire. Avoid flashy or expensive fabrics, jewelry, makeup, or tight outfits. Footwear should be simple and comfortable as per local temple practice.

• General temple etiquette: modest coverage of shoulders and legs is usually appreciated, and clothes should be neat and respectful when visiting temples or participating in rituals.

• Digambar vs. Śvetāmbara note: Both main traditions emphasize simplicity and restraint for a child’s Diksha-related activities. The dramatic clothing practices (such as nudity) belong to later stages of Digambar monkhood and do not apply to Bal-Diksha for children.
