    Difference between shanakwasi and deravasi

    9 months ago 70

Shanakwasi (Shāṇakvāsī) and Deravasi are two Śvetāmbara Jain groups that differ mainly in how they worship.

    • Shanakwasi (Sthānakvāsi)
    - Practice: They do not worship idols in temples. Worship is mainly bhāva-pūjā (inner devotion) and study, reflection, and ethical conduct in places called sthānaks/upāśrayas. - Monastic practice: Often wear a mūkhapatṭī (cloth over the mouth) as a standard part of daily practice. - Belief: Share the same core Jain beliefs as other Śvetāmbara Jains (the 24 Tirthankaras, karma, mokṣa), but emphasize non-idol worship. - Also known as: Sthānakvāsi or Terāpanthi in some lineages. - You can read more here
    • Deravasi (Mūrtipūjak)
    - Practice: They continue temple worship with images (murtis) of the Tirthankaras, along with traditional rites, puja, and rituals in derasars/temples. - Monastic practice: Do not routinely wear mūkhapatṭī in prayers; temple rituals are central. - Belief: Also share the core Jain framework, but accept image worship as a legitimate aid to devotion. - You can read more here

    Notes and nuances

    • Both groups are within Śvetāmbara Jainism and honor the same Tirthankaras and ethical ideals; the difference is primarily “how to worship” rather than what to believe.
    • Digambara vs Śvetāmbara distinctions exist, but Shanakwasi/Deravasi discussion is a Śvetāmbara context.
    • If you want, I can point to more detailed JainKnowledge pages that compare their practices side by side.
