In Jainism, gotra is not a religious doctrine or spiritual measure. It is mainly a social/ancestral lineage used by some lay Jain communities for identification and exogamy (marrying outside one’s gotra).

• How to find your gotra: Ask your family elders or check family genealogical records. Many Jain communities maintain a list of gotras (especially among Oswal, Porwal groups), but there is no single universal list for all Jains.
• What the number or names mean: Traditionally, many groups speak of a set of 84 gotras, but the exact names and even the count can vary by region and community. The important point is that gotras are social identifiers, not spiritual criteria.
• Digambar vs. Śvetāmbara: Both traditions recognize gotras in social terms, but there is no canonical Jain rule that assigns a spiritual status or authority based on gotra. Monastic lineages are a separate concept (gaccha/paramparā) and not the same as lay gotras.
