In Jainism, the importance of Mount Kailash is mainly through Ashtapad Tirth.

1. Ashtapad and Mount Kailash

• Jain scriptures say that Bhagwan Rishabhdev (Adinath), the 1st Tirthankar, attained moksha on a mountain called Ashtapad.
• “Ashtapad” means “eight steps” – it is described as a mountain with eight terraces/steps and a divine palace built by his son Bharat Chakravarti in honour of Rishabhdev’s nirvana. ( jainknowledge.com)
• Many Jain traditions identify this Ashtapad with today’s Mount Kailash (near Mansarovar, in the Himalayas/Tibet region). ( jainknowledge.com)

So, when people say “Mount Kailash” in a Jain context, they usually mean it as the traditional location of Ashtapad Tirth, the place of Rishabhdev’s moksha.

2. Spiritual importance for Jains

From Jain point of view, its importance is:

• Moksha-bhoomi of the first Tirthankar – the place where the whole tradition of Tirthankars begins with final liberation of Adinath. ( jainknowledge.com)
• Very high tirth (holy place) – even though Jains today normally cannot go there physically, it is remembered with deep devotion in prayers, stories and tirth-yatra sankalp. ( jainknowledge.com)
• Symbol of detachment and highest purity – remembering Ashtapad / Kailash reminds a Jain of:

- complete renunciation - success of spiritual effort - aim of life = moksha, not worldly enjoyment.

3. Physical vs symbolic tirth

• There is no confirmed Jain temple or visible remains today on Mount Kailash; access is also politically and geographically very difficult.
• Because of this, Jains have built symbolic “Ashtapad” replicas at places like Hastinapur, Hatpipliya etc., so devotees can worship and do symbolic yatra of Ashtapad/Kailash. ( jainknowledge.com)

These replicas are not the real mountain, but help keep the bhakti of Ashtapad–Kailash alive.
