Is chikori allowed as per jainism

    8 months ago 304

In Jainism, food is mainly judged by ahimsā (non‑violence) and whether it is a kand-mool / underground root.

Chicory (chicory root used in coffee, “chikori coffee”)

    • The part normally used as a coffee substitute is the root, dried and roasted.
    • As a root/underground part, it falls in the same broad category as potato, carrot, beet, etc., which are generally avoided by Jains because uprooting kills the plant and harms many small living beings in the soil.

So, from the standard Jain dietary view (both Śvetāmbara and Digambar):

    • Chicory root is to be treated as a root vegetable and therefore avoided.
    • If any leafy part of chicory (above‑ground leaves) were eaten like salad, it would be similar to other leafy vegetables. Those are generally allowed outside special periods, but even then many Jains reduce/stop leafy greens in Chaturmas, Paryushan, etc.

    Practical takeaway:

    • Drinking coffee/tea that contains chicory root is not recommended for a Jain trying to follow normal traditional food rules.
    • If you want to be strict, choose coffee/tea without chicory and check the label carefully.

For precise personal practice, Jains usually follow guidance of their own guru or local sangh.
