What is significance of panchkalyanak puja

    8 months ago 333

Panchkalyanak Puja celebrates the five most auspicious events (kalyānak) in the life of a Tirthankar. These are:

    1. Garbha / Chyavan Kalyanak – Conception

    - The moment the Tirthankar‑soul enters the mother’s womb. - Reminds us that true greatness begins with pure intentions and right faith.

    1. Janma Kalyanak – Birth

    - The birth of the Tirthankar. - Teaches that human birth is very precious and should be used for dharma and self‑purification.

    1. Diksha Kalyanak – Renunciation

    - When the Tirthankar leaves worldly life and takes diksha. - Inspires us to reduce attachment, anger, pride, deceit and greed, and move towards a simple, disciplined life.

    1. Kevaljnan Kalyanak – Omniscience

    - Attainment of Keval‑jnan (infinite knowledge). - Shows the goal of Jain sadhana – to remove karmas so that the soul’s natural, infinite knowledge shines.

    1. Nirvan Kalyanak – Liberation

    - Final liberation from birth and death; the soul becomes Siddha. - Reminds us that moksha is real and achievable by following the path of right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.

    Main significance of Panchkalyanak Puja

    • Smriti (constant remembrance)
By doing this puja, we repeatedly remember the entire journey of a Tirthankar’s life, so our mind slowly turns from worldly matters towards vivek and vairagya (discrimination and detachment).
    • Ideal life‑model
Each kalyanak shows one major step of spiritual progress. Together they become a complete spiritual roadmap for us – from right intention, to renunciation, to liberation.
    • Bhav‑shuddhi (inner purification)
While we offer dravya (water, rice, flowers, etc.), the real purpose is to clean our inner bhav – to reduce passions and increase forgiveness, humility, and non‑violence.
    • Karmic purification (punya)
With the right feelings, Panchkalyanak Puja becomes a cause for shedding paap karmas and gaining punya, which supports future spiritual progress.
    • Strengthening Samyak Darshan
Hearing and remembering the Tirthankar’s greatness and purity helps strengthen right faith and trust in the Jain path.

    ---

    Digambar & Shwetambar note

    • Both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions accept these same five kalyanaks and their spiritual importance.
    • Some details of the stories and the exact puja method, mantras, and granths used in Panchkalyanak Puja may differ by sect and by local sangh, but the core meaning and significance are identical – deep devotion to Tirthankars and inspiration for our own liberation.
