How to do shreni tap
Shreni Tap (also called Shrenik / Shrenikji Naam Tap) is a very strong shrāvak (householder) austerity inspired by Raja Shrenik, devotee of Bhagwan Mahavir.
Below is a simple, practical outline. Do this only with proper health and under guidance of Guru / experienced elder.
---
1. Basic Idea
- Total period: 110 days
- Tap is done in “steps” (shreni) – each step has a certain number of continuous upvaas, then one pārṇā, then next step has more upvaas, and so on.
- Along with fasting, the main focus is:

2. Shreni (Step‑wise) Method – General Pattern
Common traditional pattern (numbers can vary slightly by sangh/guru):
- There are 6 shrenis (steps).
- In each shreni, the number of continuous upvaas increases. Very roughly:
- 1st shreni – do 1 upvaas, then pārṇā
- 2nd shreni – do 2 upvaas, then pārṇā
- 3rd shreni – do 3 upvaas, then pārṇā
- 4th shreni – do 4 upvaas, then pārṇā
- 5th shreni – higher series of continuous upvaas with pārṇā in‑between
- 6th shreni – highest series, so that total becomes 83 upvaas + 27 pārṇā = 110 days
Exact breakup (how many upvaas in each shreni) is generally given personally by a Guru/pravachankar based on capacity of the sādhak.

3. Daily Vidhi During Shreni Tap
On every upvaas day:
- No food from sunrise to next sunrise (water sometimes allowed as per niyam; in many places only boiled water within fixed time).
- Do:
- Morning: Navkār mantra, Samayik, Chaityavandan - Day: Swādhyāy (Jain texts, life of Tirthankars, Raja Shrenik’s story) - Evening: Pratikraman, Kshamāpanā (asking forgiveness)
- Avoid:
- Krodh, mān, māyā, lobh (anger, pride, deceit, greed) - Gossip, arguments, TV‑mobile time‑pass, business worries as much as possible
On pārṇā day:
- Take simple, limited, pure Jain food once (or as per guru‑niyam), before sunset.
- Do Navkār, kshamāpanā, and offer bhāv that all punya goes towards moksha‑mārga.
---
4. Bhāv (Inner Attitude)
- Always remember: body‑tap is secondary; bhāv‑tap (inner purity) is main.
- Feel:
- Keep maun (silence) for some time daily if possible.
---
5. Digambar / Shwetambar View
- Both traditions accept upvaas, pārṇā, and bhāv‑tap.
- Details of count, water rules, and rituals can differ by sect and by individual guru.
- Essence is same: long, graded series of upvaas with strong inner discipline in remembrance of Raja Shrenik’s devotion.
---
6. Practical Advice
- Do not start Shreni Tap just by yourself.
- If health goes down seriously, Jain dharma allows you to stop or reduce the tap. Hinsa to self due to ignorance is not praised.

In summary: Shreni Tap = 110‑day, very strong graded fast (83 upvaas + 27 pārṇā), done with intense samayik, swādhyāy, pratikraman and ahimsa‑bhāv, traditionally under guru’s guidance, in remembrance of Raja Shrenik’s great bhakti and tap.
