In Jainism, “6th āra” means the sixth era of the time‑cycle (kālacakra). Each half‑cycle (Utsarpiṇī – ascending, and Avasarpiṇī – descending) has 6 aras. The 6th in both halves is called:

• Duḥṣamā‑duḥṣamā (Dukhama‑dukhama) = “extreme sorrow, only misery”.

Nature of the 6th āra

Across both Digambar and Shvetambar traditions, the basic description is the same:

• It is the worst period of the entire half‑cycle.
• Almost no happiness – only suffering dominates.
• Lifespan is very short, body strength and height are minimal.
• Dharma is almost completely lost from practical life.
• Violence, deceit, anger, greed, and fear are very strong.
• No Tirthankars, no Kevalis arise in our region (Bharat Kshetra) in this āra.
• True spiritual practice is extremely rare and very difficult.

Position in the cycle

For each half‑cycle:

1. Sukhama‑sukhama
2. Sukhama
3. Sukhama‑duḥṣamā
4. Duḥṣamā‑sukhama
5. Duḥṣamā
6. Duḥṣamā‑duḥṣamā (6th āra)

After the 6th āra of Avasarpiṇī ends, that whole descending half finishes, and a new Utsarpiṇī (ascending half) starts again.

Our current situation

• According to Jain tradition, we are now in the 5th āra (Duḥṣamā) of Avasarpiṇī in Bharat Kshetra – not yet in the 6th.
• After this 5th āra is over, the 6th āra (Duḥṣamā‑duḥṣamā) will begin, which will be even more miserable.
