alcohol is allowed?
In Jainism, alcohol is not allowed.
Very simply:
- Alcohol (madya) is an intoxicant – it makes the mind dull and disturbed.
- Jain dharma teaches samyam (self‑control) and ahimsa (non‑violence). When the mind is intoxicated, a person can easily hurt themselves or others, speak wrongly, or break vows.
- Therefore, both Shwetambar and Digambar traditions say that Jains should not drink alcohol or use it as a means of enjoyment.
So, from a Jain point of view: No whisky, no wine, no beer, no “light” alcohol – all are to be avoided.
