give me teachings of lord mahaveer
Here are the main teachings (divya sandesh) of Bhagwan Mahavir, explained very simply:
- Ahimsa – Non‑violence is the highest religion
- Do not hurt any living being in thought, word, or action. - Every living being (even tiny insects, plants, micro‑organisms) has a soul like us. - “Live and let live” – give space and protection to all souls.
- Satya – Truthfulness
- Always speak the truth. - But truth should be spoken without hurting others. - If truth will cause great himsa, remain silent.
- Asteya / Achaurya – Non‑stealing
- Do not take anything that is not willingly given. - Even small cheating, copying, or “using without permission” binds karma.
- Brahmacharya – Control of sensual desires
- For monks and nuns: complete celibacy. - For householders: purity and self‑control, no misuse of senses. - Control over senses makes the mind peaceful and fit for dharma.
- Aparigraha – Non‑possessiveness / Non‑attachment
- Limit possessions, money, comforts, and desires. - The real problem is attachment in the mind, not only the outer things. - Less attachment → less worry → easier path to moksha.
- Anekantavada – Many‑sidedness of truth
- Reality is very deep, our view is always partial. - Respect other viewpoints; avoid saying “only I am right; everyone else is wrong.” - This reduces quarrels, anger, and violence of thoughts.
- Syadvada – Speak carefully and conditionally
- Instead of absolute statements, we say, “from this angle, in this respect…” - This teaches humility, careful thinking, and avoids dogmatism.
- Three Jewels (Ratnatraya) – The path to liberation
Bhagwan Mahavir taught that moksha is attained by: - Samyak Darshan – Right Faith (true, unwavering belief in tattvas like soul, karma, moksha). - Samyak Jnan – Right Knowledge (correct understanding of reality and scriptures). - Samyak Charitra – Right Conduct (living according to vows and discipline).
- Self‑effort (Purusharth) and personal responsibility
- No one can wash away our karma; each soul is responsible for its own liberation. - Tirthankars show the path; walking on it is our work. - Through vows, penance, forgiveness, and meditation, the soul becomes pure.
- Equality and respect for all
- All souls are equal in their true nature – capable of becoming Siddhas. - Caste, gender, status, wealth do not decide spiritual worth; conduct does.
- Inner purity and forgiveness (Kshama)
- Do not keep anger, hatred, or revenge in the heart. - Practice forgiveness, humility, straightforwardness, and contentment. - These stop new bad karmas and make the soul lighter.
- Simple living, high thinking
- Reduce luxuries and unnecessary wants. - Use your human birth for samayik, pratikraman, adhyayan (study), dhyan (meditation). - Aim of life: purification of the soul and final liberation, not only comfort and success.
These teachings are accepted by both Digambar and Shvetambar traditions. There may be small differences in stories and scriptures, but the core principles above are common and central.
