In Jainism, when people say “bhavdevas” they almost always mean Bhavanpati Devas.

Who are Bhavanpati Devas?

In Jain dharma, all celestial beings (dev) are divided into four main groups:

1. Bhavanpati Devas
2. Vyantar Devas
3. Jyotish Devas
4. Vaimanik Devas

Bhavanpati Devas are:

• The lowest level of devs in the heavenly hierarchy.
• They live in special palaces or mansions called “bhavana”, which are below the earth regions.
• They have less power and shorter lifespan compared to higher devas.

Sub‑types (bhed) of Bhavanpati Devas

Jain scriptures describe 10 main types of Bhavanpati Devas:

1. Asurakumāra
2. Nāga
3. Vidyutkumāra
4. Suparṇa
5. Agnikumāra
6. Dvīpakumāra
7. Vāyukumāra
8. Stanitakumāra
9. Udadhi-kumāra
10. Dikkumāra

All of them are still worldly souls (samsari jiva), enjoying pleasure because of their punya (good karma), but they are not liberated. They are also not to be worshipped above Arihant–Siddha; in Jain dharma, only the Panch Parmesthi are supreme.
