Is modern egg or eggs from broiler edible in jain diet
In Jain Dharma, eggs of any type – including modern broiler (poultry farm) eggs – are not allowed in a Jain diet.
Very simply:
- Ahimsa (non‑violence)
- An egg is seen as life or potential life. - Destroying or eating it is considered himsā (violence) towards that life. - This applies whether the egg is fertilized, “table egg”, “broiler egg”, or “modern farm egg”.
- Animal‑origin food
- Jain diet is strictly vegetarian (actually lacto‑vegetarian). - All foods that come from killing or directly using animal bodies are avoided: - meat, fish, chicken, caviar, all types of eggs etc. ( jainknowledge.com)
- Both traditions agree
- Digambar and Shvetambar traditions both teach that eggs are not to be eaten by Jains. ( jainknowledge.com)
- Why “modern broiler egg” is not an exception
- Commercial poultry involves a lot of direct and indirect cruelty to birds. - Even if someone says “these are unfertilized”, Jain practice keeps it simple: - to avoid doubt and violence, all eggs are left out of the diet. ( jainknowledge.com)
So, according to Jain Dharma, modern eggs or eggs from broiler farms are not edible for a Jain following proper Jain diet.
