Bharat Kshetra (भरत क्षेत्र) in Jainism means:

1. What is “Kshetra”?

In Jain cosmology, kshetra means a region/zone of land.

1. Where is Bharat Kshetra?

- It is one of the main regions inside Jambudvipa, the central continent of the middle world (Madhya Loka). - Jambudvipa is divided into several zones (kshetras). The most important three for us are: - Bharat Kshetra - Mahavideha Kshetra - Airavat Kshetra

1. Why is Bharat Kshetra important?

- It is a karmabhumi – a land where: - humans do punya–paap (merit–sin), - can practice religion seriously, - and can attain moksha. - In the present time-cycle (avasarpini), the 24 Tirthankars, including Bhagwan Mahavir, took birth in Bharat Kshetra. - Our present human world (the Indian subcontinent and nearby region, in Jain view) is considered to be within Bharat Kshetra.

1. Name “Bharat” – why?

- It is named after Chakravarti Bharat, son of the first Tirthankar Adinath (Rishabhdev). - Hence the ancient name Bharat-varsh / Bharat-bhumi is connected with him.

1. Spiritual role of Bharat Kshetra

- In Bharat, Tirthankars do appear, but not in every time-period; there are long gaps. - In the present part of the cycle, no new Tirthankar will now be born here; we follow the teaching of past Tirthankars (especially Mahavir Swami). - Still, moksha is possible from here through right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.

1. Relation with other kshetras

- Mahavideha Kshetra – middle region where Tirthankars are always present in some part. - Airavat Kshetra – a region opposite to Bharat with similar spiritual possibilities. - Other zones (Ramyak, Hairanyavat, Haimavat) are called bhogabhumi (mainly enjoyment, not strong sadhana).

- On the basic idea – that Bharat Kshetra is a karmabhumi in Jambudvipa where our 24 Tirthankars appeared – both traditions agree. - Minor details of cosmological description can differ from text to text, but the main concept is the same.
