In Jainism there is no single, official list of all gotras for all Jains.

1. What “gotra” means in Jainism

In Jain society, gotra is mainly a family / clan name used by laypeople (shravaks–shravikas) for:

• identifying ancestry (kul, vansh)
• guiding marriages (usually avoid marriage within the same gotra)

This is a social and community custom, not a central spiritual doctrine like karma, vows, samyak darshan, etc.

2. “84 gotra” (चौरासी गोत्र)

In many Śvetāmbara Jain communities (like Oswal, Porwal, etc.) people speak of “84 gotras”.

Important points:

• These 84 are traditional clan lineages, not fixed by Jain scriptures.
• Names and even the exact list can change from community to community and region to region.
• Many lists are preserved in community-genealogy books (vanshavali, kul-pustak), not in Agams.

Because of this variation, there is no single, universally correct “list of all Jain gotras” that applies to every Jain in the world.

3. Digambar vs Śvetāmbara

• Both Digambar and Śvetāmbara lay communities may have their own gotras and counts, depending on caste, region, language, etc.
• These are social customs, not differences in core Jain philosophy.

4. Spiritual “gotra karma” (different meaning)

In Jain karma theory, there is also Gotra‑karma (status‑determining karma) which decides high/low family, social respect, etc. in a birth. This “gotra” is karmic, not a list of clan names.
