What happens after death in each gati to the soul?
In Jainism, the soul (jīv) is eternal. Only the body dies. At the very moment of death, the soul immediately (within an antar‑muhurt, less than 48 minutes) takes the next birth according to its own karma. There is no gap, no wandering ghost state.
The soul can exist in four gatis (states of existence):
- Manuṣya gati – Human
- Tiryanch gati – Animals, birds, insects, plants, etc.
- Deva gati – Heavenly beings
- Naraka gati – Hell beings
Below is what generally happens after death in each gati:
---
1. After death in Human gati
- At death, the soul instantly leaves the human body and is reborn according to its karmas and inner state (bhāv) at that time.
- From human gati, the soul can go to any of the four gatis:
- Only from human gati, moksha is possible:
(Digambar and Śvetāmbara both agree: liberation is only from human birth, at the moment of final death.)
---
2. After death in Tiryanch gati (animals, insects, plants, etc.)
- At death, the soul leaves that animal/plant/insect body and takes a new birth according to karmas.
- From tiryanch gati, the soul can generally go to:
- Tiryanch life is usually full of:
So, spiritual progress is difficult there; the main aim is eventually to gain human birth again.

3. After death in Deva gati (heavenly beings)
- Devas enjoy pleasure and long lifespans due to past puṇya.
- But when their fixed life‑span ends, they must leave that body.
- After death as a deva:
- Very important:
(Both Digambar and Śvetāmbara agree that dev-gati is not the final goal; it is still within saṃsār.)

4. After death in Naraka gati (hell beings)
- In naraka, the soul suffers intense pain due to heavy pāp karmas.
- Each hell-being has a fixed life-span in that particular hell.
- When that lifespan ends, death comes and:
- After death in hell:
- Narak is not eternal in Jainism:

Common points for all four gatis
- In all gatis:
- There is no transfer of karma from others:
- The ultimate aim in every birth is:
