Are hydroponic potatoes / onion considered jain?

    7 months ago 188

In traditional Jain view, hydroponic potatoes or onions are still not considered Jain food, even though they are grown in water and not soil.

    Reason in simple terms:

    1. Root itself is the food

    - Potato and onion are mool-kand (root / bulb). - Jain niyam is: avoid eating the root part of the plant (potato, onion, garlic, carrot, radish, etc.), not only because of soil-organisms, but also because: - the entire plant’s life is taken when the root/bulb is removed - these are considered to involve many more jivas and more himsa than fruits/leaves/seeds. 1. Medium of cultivation does not change the category

    - Whether the potato/onion grows in soil, sand, or hydroponic water, it is still a root vegetable. - The basic Jain principle is to avoid that type of plant part (the underground, life‑center root/bulb), so changing the technique of farming does not make it acceptable.

    1. Tradition across both sects

    - Both Śvetāmbara and Digambar traditions, and almost all Jain acharyas and sampradayas, keep potato, onion, garlic and similar roots in the “not to be eaten” list for shravaks following standard Jain aahar-niyam. ( jainknowledge.com)

So, according to normal Jain dietary rules, hydroponic potato and hydroponic onion are also to be avoided.

You can read simple explanations on why Jains avoid onion, potato and root vegetables here:

    • Why no potato
    • Why do we not eat root vegetables
    • Why don’t Jains eat onions
