If we Donno gata(mantra ) and don’t know to do Prathikaman and want to do varshitap ?can do varshitap or not ??
Yes, you can do Varshitap even if:
- you don’t know Gaati / Gāta (gotra) mantra, and
- you don’t know how to do full Pratikraman yet.
But there are a few important points to keep in mind.
---
1. What is most important in Varshitap?
In Jain dharma, the main thing is bhāv (inner intention), not outer show.
For Varshitap, most important is:
- Ahimsā as much as possible
- Satya, non‑stealing, brahmacharya, aparigrah according to your capacity
- No ego: “I am great because I am doing Varshitap”
- Doing alpa‑pratikraman (small repentance) every day, at least in simple words
If your bhāv is pure, tapas (penance) has value even if your vidhi is not perfect.
---
2. Not knowing Gata / Gotra mantra
- Many laypeople don’t know all mantras by heart.
- This does not stop you from doing Varshitap.
- Minimum: you should know and regularly recite Navkar Mantra with devotion.
If you wish, you can later learn specific mantras from a guru / pathshala / family elder.
---
3. What if you don’t know full Pratikraman?
Ideal Jain way:
- Daily Pratikraman is very good, especially when doing big tapas.
- But if you don’t know full Pratikraman, start with a simpler form:
Simple alpa‑pratikraman (5–10 minutes):
- Sit quietly, recite Navkar Mantra a few times.
- Recall your day: “Where did I do himsā, lie, get angry, cheat, hurt someone?”
- With folded hands, say in your own language:
“Today whatever faults I did by mind, speech, or body – knowingly or unknowingly – I repent and ask for forgiveness. I will try not to repeat them.”
- Mentally say “Micchāmi Dukkadam” for all jīvas.
This simple practice is fully in line with Jain spirit of Pratikraman. You can read a basic explanation of Pratikraman here

4. Before starting Varshitap – be careful about:
- Health: Varshitap is a very strong vrata (alternate day upvās for a long time).
- If you have any medical issue, weakness, are very young / very old, or pregnant, take guidance from doctor + guru.
- Guidance:
- Try to take āgñā (permission / guidance) from a sadhu, sadhvi, or experienced shravak/shravika. - They can tell you: - how many days, - what rules (niyam) you should keep, - how to break the fast properly, - what minimum dharma‑kārya you must do on upvās and bés days.
- Daily minimum sādhanā during Varshitap:
- Navkar Mantra (multiple times) - Short alpa‑pratikraman - Some svādhyāy: listening/reading Jain granth, stories, or Tirthankar charitra - Daya, kshamā, vinay in behavior
---
5. Is Pratikraman compulsory before Varshitap?
Scriptures emphasize that any tapas should be joined with:
- Samayik / Pratikraman
- Kayotsarg (some time in silent meditation)
- Svādhyāy (study)
- Dāna (charity) according to capacity
But they do not say: “If you don’t know long Pratikraman by heart, you cannot do Varshitap.”
So:
- If you are ready to learn and at least do a simple form of repentance daily,
- And you keep good conduct as much as possible,
then you can do Varshitap. At the same time, slowly start learning proper Pratikraman; it will make your tapas much more pure and powerful.

Simple suggestion
- First 1–2 weeks:
- Learn Navkar Mantra properly and start daily alpa‑pratikraman.
- Side by side: start learning basic parts of Pratikraman from someone or from Jain pathshala material.
- Then, with guidance of guru / elders, begin Varshitap with clear niyam and right bhāv.
This way, you don’t stop yourself out of fear, but also don’t jump without spiritual and physical preparation.
