In Jainism, time is beginningless and moves in endless cycles (kalchakra). In every half‑cycle – whether descending (avasarpinī) or ascending (utsarpinī) – 24 Tirthankars appear in Bharat Kshetra.

According to Jain scriptures and traditional acharyas:

• The 24 Tirthankars of the previous cosmic half‑cycle were the same 24, in the same order and with the same basic identities as in the present half‑cycle.
• Only details like exact parents’ names, place, etc. may differ from cycle to cycle.

24. Mahāvīr Swami

Both Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions accept this same basic list and order; there are only small differences in spellings and some narrative details.
