drink cold coffee
In Jainism, drinking coffee (hot or cold) is generally discouraged.
Simple reasons:
- Ahimsa (non‑violence)
- Coffee (like tea) is a liquid where many tiny living organisms (micro‑organisms) can grow. - Boiling or preparing such drinks often kills many of these beings, so stricter Jains try to avoid it.
- Stimulant / addiction
- Coffee has caffeine, which is a stimulant. - It can create habit and dependency (lāgna, vyasan) and disturb mental peace and self‑control, which goes against Jain ideals of saiyam and shānti.
- Tradition (both Digambar and Shwetambar)
- Many serious Jains in both traditions avoid tea and coffee in daily life, and almost all avoid it during Paryushan / Das‑Lakshan and other vratas. - Some lay Jains still drink coffee, but the higher, more careful path is to leave it.
So, from a Jain‑dharma point of view: If you want to follow Jain principles more strictly, it is better not to drink cold coffee (or any coffee).
