When can I start eating Mango
In Jain Dharma, there is no fixed tithi or calendar date for “starting” mango.
You can eat mango:
- When it comes in natural season in your area
- Not very early, greenhouse / chemical–ripened mangoes are best avoided. - Prefer naturally ripened, seasonal fruits.
- With proper care for ahimsa
- Wash well. - Cut and check carefully for worms/insects inside. - Eat only fresh, not overripe or fermented mango.
- Before sunset
- Like all Jain food, mango should be eaten only in the daytime, not at night.
- Till Ārdrā Nakṣatra starts (traditional practice)
- Many Jains stop eating mangoes from Ārdrā Nakṣatra (around late June) because tiny living beings are believed to arise in such fruits then. - After that, they give them up for the rest of the year as a tyāg for ahimsa.
So: You may start eating mangoes once good, natural-season mangoes are available in your region, eaten fresh, checked for life, and only in daytime.
