    Muthisahi pachkhan before sunrise

    6 months ago 110

“Muthisahi pachkhan before sunrise” normally is not allowed in Jain maryādā.

    1. Basic rule in Jain Dharma

    • Shwetambar and Digambar both hold:
    - No food or water before sunrise. - First eating is at least 48 minutes after sunrise (Navkārsi).

    2. What is “Muthisahi pachkhan”?

    • “Muththi-sāhī / Muthi-sahi pachkhan” = a vow taken to eat or drink
    - only after a certain time (Navkārsi / Porsi / Sadporsi etc.), and - in a controlled, limited way, usually with: - sitting properly, - folding the fist (muththi), - reciting Navkar, then taking food/water.
    • This is always after sunrise, never before.

    3. Can we take Muthi-sahi pachkhan before sunrise?

    • No, you cannot use muthi-sahi pachkhan to start eating or drinking before sunrise.
    • Even if you take such a pachkhan, it does not cancel the basic rule of “no food/water before sunrise”.

    4. Only limited exception – for medicine

    • If there is a real health need (e.g. compulsory medicine), then:
    - You take a very specific “Aushadhi Pachkhan” (medicine-only vow) - Mention: - exact medicine, - quantity, - exact time (before sunrise), - number of days. - And clearly say: “Apart from this medicine, I will not take any food or water before sunrise.”
    • Even here, it is not called “muthisahi pachkhan” for eating normally; it is only for medicine, as a special pratyākhyān.

    5. Simple takeaway

    • Normal food/water with muthi-sahi pachkhan must be after sunrise (at least Navkārsi).
    • Before sunrise:
    - No eating, no drinking. - Only carefully‑limited aushadhi pachkhan for health, if truly necessary.
