How many aagam are there
In Jainism, the number of Āgams depends on the tradition:
- Śvetāmbara tradition
- They accept 45 Āgams in total, divided as: - 11 Anga Āgam - 12 Upāṅga Āgam - 6 Chedasūtra - 4 Mūlasūtra - 10 Prakīrṇaka Sūtra - plus Nandi and Anuyogadvāra You can see a simple breakdown here:
- Digambara tradition
- They hold that the original 12 Anga Āgams are completely lost. - So, they say the true Agams no longer exist, and instead follow other main scriptures like Ṣaṭkhaṇḍāgama and Kaṣāyapāhuda (not counted as “Agam” in the same way).
So:
- If you go by Śvetāmbara view: 45 Āgams.
- If you go by Digambara view: the original Āgams are lost (number not counted today).
