Does Jain sadhus have power to see future?

    5 months ago 128

In Jainism, ordinary Jain sadhus (monks) do not have a general “power to see the future” in the magical or prediction sense that people usually imagine.

    Very briefly:

    1. Only Kevali Bhagwan (omniscient beings) know all three times

    - Jain philosophy says that a soul who attains Keval Jnan (omniscience) knows all substances and all their modes of past, present and future completely and directly. - Such a soul is called Kevali / Arihant / Tirthankar. - This is the highest state; it comes only after total destruction of certain karmas, not just by becoming a sadhu.

    1. Normal monks have limited knowledge like us, only more refined

Jainism describes five kinds of knowledge (Mati, Shruta, Avadhi, Manahparyaya, Keval). - Most sadhus have mainly Mati Jnan (through senses and mind) and Shruta Jnan (scriptural). - Very rare highly advanced souls may get Avadhi Jnan (clairvoyance) or Manahparyaya Jnan (knowing thoughts), but still this is limited, not full future of everything.

    1. No Jain scripture teaches that monks ‘predict future’ for people

    - Jain Dharma warns against running behind miracles, predictions, astrology-type curiosity, etc. - The focus is on Right Faith, Right Knowledge, Right Conduct for self‑purification and moksha, not on knowing what will happen to us tomorrow.

    1. So, what can we say clearly?

    - Yes, an omniscient Kevali Bhagwan knows past–present–future of all beings. - No, ordinary Jain sadhus do not have that complete power. - At best, a very spiritually advanced sadhu may, due to reduced karmas, have deeper insight and intuition and some special direct knowledges, but even that is not the total, infallible future-vision people imagine.

Both Digambar and Shvetambar traditions fully agree that only Kevalis are truly omniscient and that Keval Jnan is the only state that knows all three times perfectly.
