In Jain Dharma, the answer depends on who you are and your stage of life:

1. If you are a sadhu / sadhvi (monk or nun)

- Sex is completely forbidden. - One of the mahavratas (great vows) is brahmacharya – total celibacy in body, speech and mind. - Even lustful thoughts are to be avoided.

1. If you are a lay Jain (shravak / shravika, householder)

Jainism is more practical and gives limited permission with strict conditions: - Sex is allowed only within marriage, with your one lawful spouse. - It should be with restraint, not for indulgence and constant pleasure. - No premarital sex, extramarital sex, prostitution, pornography, or exploitation. - Any act that increases lust, violence, deceit, or strong attachment is spiritually harmful. - Gradually, the ideal is to reduce sexual activity and move towards more self‑control (brahmacharya).

In simple terms:

• Monk/Nun – No sex at all.
• Householder – Sex only with your spouse, with faithfulness, respect, consent and moderation, always remembering it binds karma and should be reduced over time if you want higher spiritual progress.
