2 upvas pachkan
Here is a simple, tradition-safe Pachchhakkhan (Pachkan/Sankalp) to take “2 Upvas” (two fasts). Use the version that matches your practice. If possible, take it in front of a Jain idol, monk/nun, or your home-derasar, with folded hands.
Option A — 2 consecutive Upvas (sunrise to next sunrise, two days) English “Today I, (name), a Shravak/Shravika, take Pachchhakkhan to observe 2 consecutive Upvas from today’s sunrise to the sunrise after tomorrow. I will not eat any food. I will keep the rules as per my tradition:
- Sajala: I will drink only boiled water during the permitted times (daylight), and nothing after sunset; or
- Nirjala: I will not take even water.
Option B — 2 separate Upvas on two chosen dates State each date clearly in the vow.
English “Today I, (name), take Pachchhakkhan to observe 2 Upvas on these dates: (date 1) and (date 2). On each Upvas I will not eat any food; I will follow either Sajala (boiled water only in daylight) or Nirjala (no water), as per my tradition. I will keep Ahimsa and spiritual practices. Michchhami Dukkadam.”
Important practice notes
- Time boundary: Upvas is generally sunrise-to-sunrise in both Shvetambar and Digambar traditions. After sunset, do not consume anything (Sajala allows only boiled water in daylight).
- Health: If you are unwell, take guidance; health-prescribed medicines are allowed with proper maryada in many lineages.
- Tradition wording: Shvetambar often says “Pachchhakkhan”; Digambar commonly says “Sankalp/Pratijña.” The intent is the same; keep the maryada of your guru-parampara.
