12 गुण (attributes) of Arihant

Arihant Bhagwan possesses 12 supreme attributes. They are traditionally presented as:

• The Four Infinite Qualities (Anant Chatushtaya)

1) Anant Jñān – infinite, perfect knowledge (Keval‑jñān) 2) Anant Darśan – infinite, perfect perception (Keval‑darśan) 3) Anant Cāritra – perfect, flawless conduct 4) Anant Vīrya – infinite, unobstructed energy

• The Eight Prātihārya (divine excellences that manifest around a Tīrthaṅkara)

5) Siṃhāsana – the divine throne 6) Bhāmaṇḍala (Parikara) – the radiant aura/halo 7) Chatra – celestial umbrella 8) Chāmara – fly‑whisks of honor 9) Dīpamālā – rows of divine lights 10) Deva‑dundubhi‑nāda – celestial drum sound 11) Puṣpa‑vṛṣṭi – shower of celestial flowers 12) Divya‑dhvani – the divine sermon that arises from the Arihant

Notes on traditions

• Both Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions accept these 12 attributes. Some names vary slightly (e.g., “Bhāmaṇḍala” is also called “Parikara”; “Deva‑dundubhi” as “Dundubhi‑nāda”), but the meaning remains the same.

Essence

• The first four are the Arihant’s intrinsic, perfect spiritual qualities.
• The remaining eight are extraordinary manifestations that appear in the presence of a Tīrthaṅkara and honor his teaching function.
