May I masturbate during paryushan
Short answer: No.
Why:
- During Paryushan, Jains intensify all vows, including brahmacharya (celibacy). Masturbation is a form of sexual indulgence, so it violates brahmacharya and disturbs inner restraint (sanyam). This applies in both Shwetambar and Digambar traditions for the festival period.
- For householders, even if limited sexuality is generally allowed within marriage, Paryushan is observed with temporary complete celibacy to purify passions and focus on pratikraman, svadhyaya, and tapa.
If you struggle with urges during Paryushan:
- Shift the mind immediately to Navkar Mantra japa and brief samayik.
- Keep satsang and scriptural reading; avoid triggers and idle time.
- Maintain daytime-only boiled water, light food discipline, and digital restraint.
- If a lapse occurs, do sincere pratikraman at once and renew your niyams.
