can I go for a movie tomorrow?
From a Jain view, going to a movie tomorrow (August 23, 2025) is not absolutely forbidden, but it should be decided with restraint and awareness.
Keep these principles in mind:
- Ahimsa first: avoid films that glorify violence, deceit, intense sensuality, or harsh speech, as they stir kashāyas (anger, pride, deceit, greed).
- Avoid anarthadanda (purposeless indulgence): entertainment should not pull you away from samayik, swadhyaya, or pratikraman.
- Respect your vows: if you observe chauvihār/no-night-eating, choose a time that doesn’t disturb it; avoid snacks that break dietary niyams.
- Limit bhoga–upabhoga: keep it occasional and measured, in line with aparigraha and the layperson’s vows (anuvratas).
- Check your day’s dharma: ensure it won’t make you miss samayik/pratikraman; if you do go, end the day with brief pratikraman to calm any stirred passions.
If it conflicts with your vratas, a holy period (like Paryushan/Das Lakshan), or leads to restlessness and attachment, it’s better to skip and choose swadhyaya or satsang instead.
