How do we start a syamiak
You mean “Samayik” (the practice of equanimity). Here is the simplest way to start it at home.
Basic steps (for any tradition)
- Choose a clean, quiet place. Sit on a clean āsan. Wear simple clean clothes (white if possible).
- Wash hands/feet/face. Keep a peaceful intention: “For the next 48 minutes I will stay in equanimity, avoiding rāga–dveṣa (attachment–aversion).”
- Take the vow (Pratyākhyān / Pachchakkhān)
- Mentally or aloud: “Ichchhāmi samāiyaṁ karemi” (I wish to do Samayik for one antar-muhūrta ~ 48 minutes).
- Begin with Namokār Mantra
- Recite Navkār Mantra slowly and mindfully.
- Posture: Padmāsana/Ardha-padmāsana/Sukhasana; keep spine straight, eyes softly closed or lowered; observe silence (maun) as much as you can.
- During Samayik (choose any or combine)
- Reflect on the soul’s purity and cultivate sama-bhāva (equanimity).
- Do pratikraman-alochanā (gentle repentance) and forgiveness: “Khamemi savva jīvā… Michchhāmi dukkadam.”
- Chant or study a short sutra/stotra (e.g., Logassa), or do quiet dhyān and kāyotsarga (motionless awareness).
- End with Namokār Mantra.
- Humbly admit any lapses and reaffirm the resolve to keep sama-bhāva in daily life.
Traditional sequences (brief)
- Śvetāmbara (common home format)
- Samayik → Chauvīsath Paṭṭo/Logassa → Guru-vandan (if applicable) → short Pratikraman → Kāyotsarga → Pratyākhyān.
- Digambara (common home format)
- Navakāra Mantra → Navadevatā vandanā → contemplation on 5 Samiti, 3 Gupti, 12 Bhāvanā → sāmāyika-dhyān and kāyotsarga → forgiveness prayer → resolve.
Helpful points
- Time: one antar-muhūrta (about 48 minutes).
- Conduct: no eating, phone, or worldly talk/work; keep gentle body, speech, and mind.
- Aim: pacify passions, reduce karmic inflow, and strengthen ahimsā and self-restraint.
