Can I take food item inside temple
Short answer: No. In Jain temples, you should not carry or consume any food inside the temple premises, especially not in the garbhagriha (sanctum). This preserves pavitrata (purity) and avoids even subtle himsa.
- Both Shwetambar and Digambar traditions maintain: no eating or drinking inside the temple.
- Offerings, if allowed locally (e.g., mishri as symbolic naivedya), are kept in designated areas and never eaten in front of the idol. Distribution, if any, is done outside the sanctum and as per the temple’s rules.
- Avoid bringing cooked items, fruits with many seeds, or anything with onion/garlic. Water bottles and all eatables should be left outside.
