Why we do darpan to bhagvan

    12 months ago 287

In Jain tradition, doing “darpan” (mirror) to Bhagwan is an upachār—an honor offered to the Vītarāga Tirthankaras. The Jina does not “need” a mirror; it is for our own inner bhāva.

    • What it means: The mirror reminds us to look within. Just as a mirror shows outer dust, darpan teaches us to notice and remove inner dust—anger, pride, deceit, greed—and strive for the Jina-like, pure soul. This is atma‑darshan and a step toward samyak‑darshan.
    • Why it is done in temples: After or along with other upachārs, a small mirror may be shown near the mūl‑nāyak or placed so the image is reflected. Practically it helps devotees view the idol in a crowded sanctum; spiritually it says “turn your vision inward.”
    • Sect notes:
    - Shvetāmbara Mūrtipūjak: darpan/mirror is commonly used as an upachār along with dhoop and dīp. - Digambara: usage varies by region/temple; chauri and other honors are common; mirror may or may not be present. - Shvetāmbara Sthānakvāsī/Terāpanth: no mūrti‑pūjā, so darpan is not practiced.
    • Essence: Darpan is a symbolic aid to cultivate humility, self‑reflection, and purity, keeping ahiṁsā and temple śauc (purity) foremost. It is a helpful practice, not a compulsory one.
