Welcome. Here is a very simple, authentic introduction to Jain Dharma.

    What Jain Dharma is

    • Jain means follower of the Jinas (Victors), the enlightened teachers called Tirthankaras. The last Tirthankar of this era is Mahavir (599–527 BCE).
    • Goal: Moksha (liberation) of the soul by stopping new karmas and shedding old karmas through Right Faith, Right Knowledge, and Right Conduct (Ratnatraya).

    Core principles

    • Ahimsa: total non‑violence in thought, word, and deed.
    • Satya, Achaurya (Asteya), Brahmacharya, Aparigraha: truth, non‑stealing, celibacy/chastity, non‑possessiveness.
    • Anekantavada and Syadvada: many‑sided truth and careful, qualified speech that avoids dogmatism.
    • Seven Tattvas: Jiva (soul), Ajiva (non‑soul), Asrava (influx of karma), Bandha (bondage), Samvara (stoppage), Nirjara (shedding), Moksha (liberation).

    The path (for all)

    • Three Jewels (Ratnatraya): Samyak Darshan, Samyak Jnan, Samyak Charitra.
    • Laypeople take small vows (Anuvratas). Monks/nuns take great vows (Mahavratas) with complete renunciation.
    • Daily practices: Samayik (equanimity meditation), Pratikraman (introspection and repentance), Kayotsarga (still meditation), study, and careful living.

    Prayer

    • The most fundamental prayer is the Namokar (Navkar) Mantra. It bows to five supreme beings (Panch Parmeshti) and cultivates humility and purity.

    Diet and lifestyle

    • Strict vegetarian (traditionally lacto‑vegetarian), avoid root vegetables, avoid eating after sunset, careful sourcing and mindful consumption to minimize harm. Simplicity and limiting possessions express Aparigraha.

    Festivals

    • Paryushan (Śvetāmbara, 8 days) and Das‑Lakshan Parva (Digambara, 10 days): a time of fasting, study, forgiveness, and strong focus on ahimsa. The essence is self‑purification and asking forgiveness: “Micchami Dukkadam.”

    Traditions

    • Two main traditions: Śvetāmbara and Digambara. Essentials of doctrine are shared; some scriptures, practices, and dress codes differ. Tattvartha Sutra is respected by both.

    Start today (very simple steps)

    • Morning: 5–10 minutes of Namokar Mantra with understanding.
    • One act of carefulness: gentle speech, slow mindful walking, or avoiding waste.
    • Food: eat vegetarian, avoid roots if possible, and avoid eating after sunset.
    • Evening: brief Pratikraman (recall faults, ask forgiveness, resolve to improve).
    • Weekly: read a few lines on the basics and reflect on one principle like Ahimsa or Aparigraha.
