    what is dighambar

    12 months ago 568

“Digambar” (Digambara) is one of the two main Jain traditions. The word means “sky‑clad,” i.e., wearing the sky as the only garment.

    Key points:

    • Monastic ideal: Digambar monks practice complete non‑possession, so they do not wear clothes. They keep only the picchī (soft peacock‑feather whisk) and a kamaṇḍalu (water gourd). Digambar nuns (āryikās) are clothed.
    • Idol style: Tīrthankar images are unadorned and nude, with a serene, detached look, usually in kāyotsarga (standing meditation) or padmāsana (lotus posture). No ornaments or glass eyes are used.
    • Scriptures and teachers: Classical texts revered include Ṣaṭkhaṇḍāgama and Kaṣāyapāhuḍa; foundational ācāryas include Kundakunda, Samantabhadra, Pūjyapāda, Akalaṅka, and Nemichandra.
    • Practice emphasis: Strong stress on aparigraha (non‑possession), tapas (austerity), careful alms practice (bhojan in the palms), and daily kāyotsarga.
    • Doctrinal distinctions (Digambar vs. Śvetāmbara):
    - Monastic dress: nude vs. white‑clad. - Text history: differences about which ancient scriptures survived. - Women’s liberation: Digambar doctrine says a woman cannot attain kevalajñāna/mokṣa in this era without rebirth as a man; Śvetāmbara holds that women can attain liberation.
