Digambar Jain Das lakha
Das Lakha (Dash Lakshana) is a Digambar Jain observance, a 10-day period focused on cultivating ten supreme virtues of the soul. Each day is tied to one virtue, with practices like self‑examination, prayer, and forgiveness.
The ten virtues (as observed in Digambar tradition) 1) Kshama — forgiveness 2) Mardava — humility 3) Arjava — straightforwardness/straight dealing 4) Shaucha — inner and outer purity 5) Satya — truth 6) Samyam — self-restraint 7) Tapa — austerity 8) Tyag — renunciation 9) Akinchanya — non‑possession 10) Brahmacharya — celibacy/chastity
Key notes
- Digambar: Das Lakshana Parva is the 10-day festival of these virtues, often accompanied by study of scriptures, prayer, and acts of sumpatti (self-restraint) and pratikraman (confession/repentance) from day to day.
- Shvetambar: the related, widely observed period is Paryushan, usually 8 days, with a strong emphasis on forgiveness (samvatsari) at the end. The spirit is the same, but the structure differs.
