Who divided the two sects in jainism?

    12 months ago 95

It wasn’t one person who divided Jainism into two sects. The split into Digambara (“sky-clad”) and Śvetāmbara (“white-clad”) happened over time, mainly around the early centuries CE, and was formalized later.

    • The common traditional story starts with a famine in Magadha. Acharya Bhadrabahu led a group of monks south to Karnataka, while another group under Sthulabhadra stayed in the north. After the famine ended, differences in practice (nudity for monks vs. wearing white robes) and in which scriptures were authoritative gradually grown into two distinct communities. The split was solidified in the 5th–6th century CE at the Council of Vallabhi, where Śvetāmbara texts were codified as canonical, something Digambaras did not attend or accept. • Key points often highlighted in Jain tradition:
    - Digambaras practice nudity for monks and hold that women cannot attain moksha in the present life according to their tradition. - Śvetāmbaras wear white robes and generally believe that women can attain liberation. - The two groups also differ in accepted scriptures and some ritual practices, though core Jain ethics (ahimsa, aparigraha, anekantavada) remain the same.
