How do I experience leshya . What should I do to experience which leshya I have. What leshyas do abhavi not get.
You cannot “directly feel” or measure your leshyā the way you feel hunger or take your temperature. Leshyā is a very subtle state of the soul, known exactly only to Kevalī Bhagwān. But you can indirectly understand your present tendency by honestly watching your thoughts, emotions, and reactions.
I’ll break it into your three questions:
---
1. What is leshyā in simple words?
Leshyā = “coloring of the soul” according to your inner state:
- Krishna (black) – very cruel, violent, merciless, wants to harm.
- Neel (blue) – depressed, jealous, harming mentality, but slightly less cruel.
- Kapot (grey/brown) – careless, lazy, selfish, does not think long‑term.
- Tejo (red) – starting to be good: courage, some discipline, but still anger/ego.
- Padma (yellow) – gentle, forgiving, kind, controlled.
- Shukla (white) – full equanimity, compassion, no revenge, no selfishness.
The famous “six friends and the fruit tree” story is a clear illustration of these six leshyās. You can read that simple story here

2. How to “experience” or know which leshyā you have?
You cannot label it with 100% accuracy yourself, but you can observe your mind and see in which direction you are:
Check your reactions in daily life
Ask yourself, very honestly:
- When someone insults me:
- Do I strongly want to hurt back, take revenge, destroy them? → closer to Krishna / Neel. - Do I get angry but control myself a little? → Kapot / Tejo. - Do I try to understand, forgive, remain calm? → Padma / Shukla.
- When I see a weak being (animal, poor person, debtor, enemy):
- Do I enjoy their suffering, or feel “they deserve more suffering”? → darker leshyās. - Do I at least feel “let them not suffer so much” and some pity arises? → moving upwards. - Do I feel deep compassion and try to help without ego? → brighter leshyās.
- When money, pleasure, or status is in front of me:
- Will I cheat, lie, or harm others for it? → darker. - Will I avoid big sins but still bend rules? → middle. - Will I clearly choose dharma over gain, even with loss to myself? → brighter.
- How often do I feel:
- Intense anger, hatred, jealousy, revenge? → Krishna / Neel. - Laziness, carelessness, “chalta hai”, no concern for future births? → Kapot. - Sincere effort for punya, some self‑control, but still ego? → Tejo. - Strong wish for dharma, kindness, forgiveness, less ego? → Padma. - Stable equanimity and non‑attachment even in loss/gain? → Shukla side.
Your dominant pattern over time, not a single moment, gives you a hint of your leshyā tendency.
What to do to move towards better leshyā
You cannot just “see” leshyā, but you can purify it through:
- Samayik (equanimity practice)
Daily sitting, even 12–48 minutes, with: - no raag–dvesh (attachment–aversion), - pratikraman (confession/repentance), - forgiveness bhāvanā for all beings.
- Bhavna (right feelings):
Regularly cultivate: - Maitri (friendliness to all), - Pramod (joy in others’ virtues), - Karuna (compassion for suffering), - Madhyastha (equanimity / non‑interference).
- Control of kashāyas (anger, pride, deceit, greed):
- Catch them early (as soon as they arise in thought). - Reduce their intensity, duration, and frequency. - Take small vows: “Today I will not shout”, “Today I will not lie for money”, etc.
- Right diet & conduct (aahar & vyavahār):
- Avoid unnecessary violence (non‑veg, alcohol, etc.). - Simple living, less possessions, more contentment. - Keep good company; avoid people/places that excite anger, greed, lust.
As these purifications grow, your leshyā naturally shifts from dark to bright.

3. Which leshyās do abhavya jīvas not get?
Important points about abhavya:
- Bhavya = soul capable of moksha.
- Abhavya = soul that will never attain moksha because samyag‑darshan never arises.
Only a Kevalī Bhagwān truly knows who is bhavya or abhavya; we should never declare anyone abhavya. You can read more here and here
About leshyā and abhavya:
- All samsāri jivas (whether bhavya or abhavya) can have the first five leshyās (Krishna, Neel, Kapot, Tejo, Padma) according to their mental states.
- Shukla leshyā in its highest form is associated with very advanced spiritual stages (like 13th–14th guṇasthān) leading to keval‑jñān and moksha.
So, in simple words:
- Abhavya can go up to some auspicious leshyās, but:
- The final supreme shukla leshyā leading to liberation is not attained by abhavya jivas.
---
Essence for practice
- Do not worry “Am I abhavya?” – that doubt itself is harmful and useless.
- Live as if you are surely bhavya:
By doing this, whatever your present leshyā is, it will surely move towards Padma and Shukla directions, which is the real purpose of knowing about leshyā in Jain Dharma.
