    Is having sex wrong

    6 months ago 199

In Jain dharma, whether sex is “wrong” depends on who you are and how it is done.

    1. For monks and nuns (sadhus, sadhvīs)

    • Any sex is absolutely wrong.
    • They take the Mahāvrata of Brahmacharya – complete celibacy in body, speech and mind.
    • Even sexual thoughts and deliberate arousal are faults.

    2. For lay people (householders – śrāvaks/śrāvikās)

Sex is not totally banned, but it is strictly controlled:
    • Allowed
    - Only with your lawful spouse (swadara‑santosh). - With mutual consent, care, and non‑violence. - With moderation, not as constant indulgence.
    • Wrong / Paap in Jain view when it involves:
    - Before marriage or outside marriage (premarital or extramarital). - Cheating, force, manipulation, or any kind of himsā (violence/exploitation). - Excessive lust, addiction to sex, pornography, or pleasure-seeking that pulls you away from dharma. - Sexual acts during periods when you have taken special vows of tapasya, Paryushan, Paushadh, etc., where celibacy is expected.

Both Digambar and Shvetambar agree on the main points:

    • Ascetics: complete celibacy.
    • Householders: limited sex within marriage, with strong self‑restraint, moving gradually toward more brahmacharya.

    3. Spiritual view in simple words

    • Sex is powerful; it easily creates attachment, jealousy, anger, deceit.
    • These passions cause karmic bondage, so Jain dharma teaches:
    - Start from discipline and faithfulness, - Then gradually move toward more purity and celibacy as you progress spiritually.
